Strong Winter Storms Delay Push for Alaska for Green RV

December 24, 2008

Well, I had hoped to be in Alaska on December 21st completing the 2008 Wonder Explore Believe 49 State Tour , a full 2 months early.  That said, I made it off Mount Rainier & out of Seattle , Washington just in time. Heavy & record breaking winter storms have blanketed the Northwest for 5 solid days now, making my push for Alaska all but impossible. It remains my hope to see Alaska before the final week of February.

The drive East across the North mid-section of our country has been no picnic. The high winds, snow and ice have reduced my speed at times to 20 MPH for what seems like hours on end. I’ve had to repair one of my snow chains twice and have fought an easterly wind almost non-stop. I’ve seen over 100 jackknifed tractor-trailers, SUV rollovers and cars in roadside ditches.

The Holidays, an upcoming Televison appearance on WGN and the reconstruction of the entire energy management system of the Mobile Base Camp by Xantrex next week in Elkhart , Indiana have been great motivation for pushing through the storms. That said, the toughest mile of the entire Tour were the opening moments when I made the decision to turn away from Alaska.

Hey Brian, I really enjoyed your segment on the KPOJ Morning Show today. I have a similar dream of converting an old school bus into a self-sufficient green RV, but I don’t have the means to do so just yet. Your journey is a great inspiration and I hope that I can follow in your footsteps someday. Don’t feel too bummed about having to turn back before going to Alaska, just think of it as a great excuse to come back to the northwest again, hopefully when the weather is better. I’ll look forward to hearing more tales as you keep rolling along. Good luck on your journey, safe travels and Happy Holidays!
