Wind Power and The Green RV, Brian Brawdy Style

November 10, 2008

Many of the emails I receive ask about the Green RV and the steps needed to harvest the natural power of the wind. The process begins with my Air Breeze Wind Turbine which works in conjunction with my Kyocera photo voltaic panels.

The two biggest hurdles in the beginning were just how to attach the telescoping pole to my LANCE Camper 1181 and the transportation/storage/security of the turbine and a system that could make it easy to deploy and function.

For a truck camper, the standard metal support bracket and telescoping poles are way too heavy so I turned to Keith Watters at W.F. Enterprises, the same company that manufactured the brackets to hold my solar panels. He designed two brackets that attach permanently at the rear of the Mobile Base Camp, one where my Atwood Electric Jacks attaches on the left side and the other that secures on the roof, directly above.

Now, the best way to transport, store and secure my wind turbine is with my Yakima Sky Box Pro (I dig both the design with 80% recycled plastics and Yakima’s corporate Planet Payback campaign). Once in position, I simply remove it from the Sky Box Pro, slide the cord and the attached pole section into the sleeve connecting the two brackets. Down below, I plug in, route through my Apollo Solar charge controller and I am ready to go.

I’ve heard stories of noise and vibration of other wind turbine setups. This design is as quiet and stable as it is effective and is allowing me to finish the 2008 Wonder Explore Believe National Tour.

What a great concept. We try to be as Eco-Friendly and green as possible, at home, in our limo business and on the road in our RV. Our home/office is energy star rated and and a 7500 watt solar system provides over 90% of our electric needs. Our committment to composting and recycling means very little goes into our trash toter each week.

We also believe wholeheartedly in using #1 rated Amsoil 0W-30 synthetic oil in all of our limos and personal vehicles. This allows us to have 25,000 mile oil change intervals. This means 42 fewer quarts of waste oil and 7 fewer used oil filters per car. Tests also show the reduced friction of Amsoil reduces tailpipe emissions and improves mileage.

For our diesel pusher, we expect to put 100,000 miles on the odometer before our next oil change. Check out the dual remote bypass system.
